Paul Armstrong was born and raised in Gadsden, Alabama. His love for Gospel music was fostered from a very early age. His Dad, Jim, was once himself a member of the Blue Ridge Quartet. Paul recalls, “As far back as I can remember, I could hear Dad singing in the house. He would always either be singing Gospel music or Hymns. Hearing him sing made me want to do that as well. Even before I was saved, Gospel music and Hymns touched my soul”.
Paul remembers being raised “in church”. “My parents were active members of a church in Gadsden and took us boys pretty much every time the doors were open. I was exposed to wonderful preaching and singing. That within itself fostered a deep desire over time to know God on a more personal level. When I was twelve, I was attending a youth seminar in Saks, AL. When the invitation was given on February 12, 1977, I knew God was calling me to Himself. I was saved that day”.
Not long after being saved, Paul’s Dad made sure to take the family to Gospel concerts wherever practical. Paul heard groups such as the Kingsmen, Cathedrals, Speers, Happy Goodman Family and the like on a regular basis. “Hearing those groups and seeing the joyful expressions on their faces and the faces of audiences as they sang definitely kindled a desire in me to do that one day”. Paul recalls a concert where he heard Squire Parsons sing: “after the concert, I followed him into the parking lot and he talked with me like he’d known me all his life. I told him that night that I hoped to do what he was doing for the Lord one day. He smiled and told me to commit that to prayer and that the Lord would show me the way”.
“I had been singing around the house and at school with my classmates pretty much all along. After I was saved, singing took on a whole new meaning to me. I knew from a very early age that I would sing for the Lord one day. That would be the way He would use me to communicate His love for the whole world”. Paul sang his first “public solo” in seventh grade. In high school, Paul’s love for music would grow deeper, as along came his first musical mentor (Paul Edmondson), also his high school’s choir director. Paul’s vocal skill developed rapidly in High School. He sang in talent shows, homecoming programs, patriotic programs and with the choir as well as the show choir. He was also a member of the Alabama All State Choir for his last two years of high school.
After high school, Paul attended Gadsden State Community College, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Liberty University. Through his college years, he sang in choirs as well as was a bass singer of a quartet. Paul continued working on his vocal skills throughout college and took singing engagements as a soloist as well.
Paul has had the privilege of singing in Washington D.C. on the National Mall. He has also sung at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN as well as at the National Quartet Convention in 2008. He has shared the Gospel through music as well all over in churches, retreats, seminars, conventions, etc. People are encouraged and challenged in his concerts. He shares the love of Christ for all mankind in an exciting and passionate manner. “I am careful to remember the reason I sing. It is for the glory of the Lord Who gave His life for me on Calvary so that I could be saved – and I want to communicate that to as many as possible all over the world”.
I can honestly say there is no time in my life when I experience God’s presence more than when I am presenting His message to an audience. Prior to a concert, that place and those people have literally been bathed in prayer. I stand in awe every time I see the work of the Holy Spirit among people. I am humbled that God would use me for this work”.
In 2007, Paul recorded his first CD, “Statement of Faith”. He has traveled and sung with that CD since January of 2008. Audiences tend to warm up to his genuine and heartfelt presentation and testimony rather quickly. Pastors and Worship Leaders alike are quick to ask him back for a follow up date. Paul's unique presentation and testimony leave audiences with a heart-felt touch of God's grace and mercy.
Paul has been featured in the Alabama Baptist Newspaper as well as on the East Alabama Today television show. He was most recently featured in an article in Inertia, a Christian publication in northern Alabama. The article in Inertia, interestingly, was written by one of Paul’s former high school teachers who says with excitement, “Paul’s love for the Lord had a huge impact on me as a teacher and is part of the reason I walk with Christ today”.
Since Paul’s first CD was recorded as an independent artist, he is more than willing to get radio stations what they need in order to get his music out to the masses.
